Cause of Montana Amtrak derailment still under investigation

UPDATED: Tue., Oct. 26, 2021

A preliminary report on the derailment of an Amtrak train in north-central Montana last month that killed three people and injured dozens more gave no information on the cause of the accident, but said the train’s emergency brakes were activated and that Amtrak estimated the damage at $22 million.

If you’d like to make a call: 10-digit dialing begins in Eastern Washington today – what gives?

On Sunday, the central office code 988 will switch over to directing callers to a national suicide prevention line by order of the Federal Communications Commission. Because that code is used to direct calls to the phone subscribers in the 509 area code, Eastern Washingtonians will have to dial the full 10-digit number in order to connect, whether on mobile or a landline.

Women of the Year: Vanessa Waldref working to make sure her appointment as female U.S. attorney won’t be last

Waldref, 41, a Gonzaga Prep alumnus and former United States Assistant Attorney in the office, was sworn in to lead it Oct. 7 after nomination and confirmation in the U.S. Senate. She took the oath with four former U.S. attorneys for the office, her northeast Spokane-bred family and several members of the legal community, including former coworkers that are the workhorses of an office she'll manage.
